Virginia Legal Aid Society (VLAS) is a nonprofit law firm established in 1977 to provide free civil legal services to eligible low-income residents in Central, Southside and Western Tidewater Virginia. VLAS serves these communities by providing free information, advice, and representation in such areas as housing, healthcare, income and benefits, family issues, consumer, and education. We handle education, housing, health care, public benefits, family and consumer law. To determine whether we can help you, LawLine paralegals must screen you for eligibility. During this brief screening, we will gather demographic information including household size; income and asset information; conduct a required check for conflicts of interest; and get a brief description of your legal problem.

You may apply online or by phone at 866-534-5243 9:00am to 3:30pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

VLAS (Farmville) serves the following counties: Amelia, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Prince Edward, and Brunswick.

Mission Statement: To resolve the serious legal problems of low-income people, promote economic and family stability, reduce poverty through effective legal assistance, and to champion equal justice.

My abusive husband is currently serving a 2 year term in piedmont on felony drug charges. I am on unemployment and can't afford to pay for the divorce. I would love to have the divorce in the works before he gets out

Legal Aid Funding
Legal aid professionals and organizations oftentimes receive government funding for taking on cases with those who cannot afford attorneys. For the most part, funding is limited so legal aid entities can only take on a limited amount of cases. Qualifications are often rigid.
