Virginia Legal Aid Society (VLAS) is a nonprofit law firm established in 1977 to provide free civil legal services to eligible low-income residents in Central, Southside and Western Tidewater Virginia. VLAS serves these communities by providing free information, advice, and representation in such areas as housing, healthcare, income and benefits, family issues, consumer, and education. We handle education, housing, health care, public benefits, family and consumer law. To determine whether we can help you, LawLine paralegals must screen you for eligibility. During this brief screening, we will gather demographic information including household size; income and asset information; conduct a required check for conflicts of interest; and get a brief description of your legal problem.

You may apply online or by phone at 866-534-5243 9:00am to 3:30pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

VLAS (Lynchburg) serves the City of Lynchburg and the counties of: Amherst, Appomattox, Campbell, and Halifax.

Mission Statement: To resolve the serious legal problems of low-income people, promote economic and family stability, reduce poverty through effective legal assistance, and to champion equal justice.

I have about $500 that I would like to use to pay someone’s rent. Do I need to call Social Services or just where would I go? Do not need to know person or family but could do it anonymously. Just need to be pointed in right direction.

Have a garnishment for a vehicle that I turned in myself was an ass to do so I couldn't afford it anymore so I turned it in. Try to contact the new office that paid for my loan offered $150 a month to start off with until I was able to pay more they denied me court date was set up to go in I wasn't able to make the court date however I forgot to call and reschedule and therefore I guess they were awarded the garnishment the company never contacted me after that I tried once or twice to contact them and wasn't able to reach them. And the next thing I know months and months later the garnishment notice came one by mail and the other by sheriff. I don't mind paying even if it has to stay with garnishment but I cannot afford what they're requesting to take out of my check which totals almost the amount of the original car payment couldn't afford it then and can't afford it now therefore I need help

Important Information

Legal Aid Funding
Legal aid professionals and organizations oftentimes receive government funding for taking on cases with those who cannot afford attorneys. For the most part, funding is limited so legal aid entities can only take on a limited amount of cases. Qualifications are often rigid.
